Festivals - Concert Festival

Band and Orchestra
32th Annual Concert Festival
April 3,4 and 5, 2009

For our 2009 Concert Festival our pricing will be $300.00 with late registration fee being $350.00 per ensemble.

Note to Directors:

It is the purpose of the Massachusetts Instrumental and Choral Conductor's Association to encourage and support high performance standards by High School, Middle School, and Elementary School musical organizations. MICCA Festival programs encourage the improvement of a group's musical standards by providing musical adjudication by highly qualified adjudicators. Attendance at a festival also affords organizations an opportunity to hear performances by other groups and experience the presentation of a wide variety of musical literature.

Participating groups are evaluated on the merit of their performance, and awards presented are based on a medals system. Groups achieving a score in the highest rating bracket receive a Gold Medal; groups in the second bracket receive a Silver Medal; groups in the third bracket receive a Bronze Medal; groups in the fourth bracket receive a Medal of Merit; and groups in the fifth bracket receive a Festival Participation Medal.

Ensemble Workshops
Each ensemble will progress to a workshop room following the adjudicated stage performance. At this time, an adjudicator will work with your students on the pieces they have just performed. (Guests may observe as space permits). The Ensemble Workshop is possibly the most valuable aspect of the Concert Festival.

Performance Requirements
Visit the Required List page for an explanation of a required piece. MICCA has adopted the NBA Selected Music List for Bands 8th edition: The list is graded so that directors might have benchmarks to measure the growth of their groups, not for festival classification. MICCA provides a link to NBA to register for membership and/or just to purchase the booklet. If you wish to know if a piece you are considering is on the list while you wait to acquire it please use the Contact Us Form and a member of MICCA will respond to you.

Each band must program three selections within the allowed stage time of 30 minutes. One selection must be a march. (There are no restrictions concerning the march and the director need not refer to the MICCA graded list for this selection). One selection must be chosen from the Required Music List, and the third selection is left to the director's discretion. We trust that directors will choose festival quality repertoire. Failure to follow the performance requirements will result in disqualification.

Directors who are planning to perform in the Concert Festival must consider the following:

  • 1. The program must include a march, a selection from either the National Band Association listing or the MICCA Grade 1 list, and a piece of the director's choice.
  • 2. Please keep in mind that the entire piece must be performed unless otherwise indicated in the MICCA listing. MICCA will not honor, for example, performing a movement of a larger work (such as mvmt 2 of Holst’s Second Suite) as fulfillment of the MICCA requirement.
  • 3. Some pieces may be permanently out of print. Directors are advised to contact members of the Executive Board, who may assist you in acquiring these pieces.

Orchestras will also perform three pieces of the director's choice for either full orchestra or strings alone. There is no prescribed list for orchestra. MICCA believes that orchestra's should demonstrate a variety of styles in the programming and recommends against a single work of three or more movements.

Three copies of each score with all measures numbered will be necessary at the festival performance. Full scores are required of each of the two graded selections and a full score to the March is desired, but a condensed score will be accepted.

Stars at Symphony
MICCA, in collaboration with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, is again pleased to continue the tradition of Stars at Symphony. All gold medal groups from our concert and choral festivals will be invited to perform at Symphony Hall in Boston on either April 18th or 25th, 2009. This insures that every gold medal group will have a chance to perform at one of the two dates. The excitement of performing at these venues will be a lasting memory for all. We are indeed proud that we can offer this program to you.
